Support Sound Design Live on Patreon

By Nathan Lively

Patreon is a great way for people like me to use crowdfunding to support their work. It’s basically like an ongoing Kickstarter campaign where you can pledge a certain amount for each new podcast that I create. Don’t worry about paying to much in a month or accidentally going over your budget because you can set a maximum pledge per month.

My content is still free. I’m just asking for your support. In return, every time you listen to an episode of Sound Design Live you’ll know that you contributed to it’s creation.

sound-design-live-patreonIf you want to give a little bit more per month I have a bunch of cool bonus offerings like the Sound Design Live eBook, a monthly Q&A session, career coaching, and even participation during the live interviews.

Another really cool thing about contributing through Patreon is that the more supporters I have, the more time I can spend on Sound Design Live, and the more great educational interviews I can publish for you. I get lots of great suggestions for people I should get on the show, but I rarely have time to chase them all down. Right now it takes me a whole day to schedule, research, record, edit, mix, publish, and share each episode, so I really only have time for one a month. If enough of you contribute on a regular basis I can change that and start publishing on a more regular schedule.

Basically what I’m saying is that I’d like to move to a system where I publish valuable interviews that you love and you support me for it because it helps you build your career.

Thank you.

Sound Design Live Is Back!

By Nathan Lively

sound-design-live-ebook-cover-featuredimage

sound-design-live-ebook-coverI love music, live events, and audio, and during the last few months I’ve rediscovered that I love Sound Design Live. I’m really excited to show you what I’ve been working on!

First of all, there’s this ballin’ website. I’m not a pro web designer, so let me know if you see any problems. More on that later. Second, I wrote a book for sound engineers, yo! Well, not really. Actually I compiled the best parts of my first two years of interviews into an eBook, but that’s close, right?

This is the book that I needed in college when I was trying to figure out what to do with myself, unaware of the many opportunities and paths available to me as a sound engineer. This is the book of fresh ideas, reminding me of all the creativity I can bring to the job, that I needed when I started to get burned out. And this is book that I need now to create a sense of community in an industry that often feels lonely and under-served.

The book will officially launch on July  14; however, if you preorder this week I will include free upgrades for life! Free upgrades? What are this? I plan to publish an updated version every year with the best new information from these crazy podcasts, and when you preorder, you’ll get every update delivered to you automatically, hot and  fresh off the virtual press. See below for more details, or take my word for it and

New Site Design!

So, back to the website. I’m going to keep doing the podcast, obvs, and I will be adding new features like tutorials, articles, and gear reviews. The kind of thing you’ll want to read with your morning coffee. Then you’ll laugh said coffee through your nose. In fact, if that doesn’t happen, money-back guarantee.

Get ready for:

  • bob-mccarthy-Sound-Systems-Design-Optimization-second-editionPodcast Interviews – Each month I will focus on a different aspect of working as a sound engineer, and each focus will kick off with an interview.
On deck, I have Paul Griffiths on mobile job search and career advice, Wendy Jo Peterson (the Roadie Nutritionalist) on food and drink at work, Peter West on the Technical Theatre Bible, Bob McCarthy on Sound System Design & Optimization, Sara Harowitz on Freelancer’s Union, Dave Swallow on live audio, and Jacob Worek on event safety.
  • Pro Audio Reviews – Product reviews of audio hardware and software, including headphones, compressors, microphones, mixers, speakers, and books.
Coming up, I’ll review a condenser mic, software for invoicing clients, job search engines, a Mediterranean cookbook, wireless headset microphones, Bob McCarthy’s book on sound system design, The Freelancer’s Bible, and The Event Safety Guide.
  • sound-design-live-helga-thumbnailTutorials & Resources – Articles, tips, and techniques on the how-to of sound engineering, sound design, sound system design & optimization, and audio engineering.
Upcoming topics include: Condensers for Live Use, Best Tips for Building a Freelance Career, How To Automate Your Job Search, How Much Do Sound Engineers Make?, Meals That Last For Days, How To Tune A Sound System In 15min, and How To Keep track of Expenses For The Greatest Tax Deduction.

Sounds like a party, right? That’s because each post will be part of a series focusing on a different aspect of working in pro audio. After a year, I will have a whole course laid out to help you build your career as a sound engineer.

As you may have noticed, this site has been redesigned from the ground up using the Thesis framework from DIY Themes. I don’t necessarily recommend it, but comment below if you want more info. I hope that it’s overall a more fun experience and easier to navigate than it was before. Check out the responsive design on your phone or tablet. Looks great! (Pat pat on my own back.)

Of course, it’s still a work in progress, so if you see any problems please tell me!

New eBook For Sound Engineers!

As I mentioned, I am publishing an eBook based on the first two years of podcast interviews I did for Sound Design Live. I transcribed all of the interviews and assembled the best parts to give shape to the technical and career challenges that we face in the pro audio industry. The book has lots of great information on pushing buttons, a whole chapter on educational advice for students, and some high-fives and dirty jokes. As a countdown to the release date, every day this week I will publish a new pro audio interview or article from my series on condenser microphones. Everyone who preorders the book during this week will receive 30% off the normal price and free upgrades for life!
